secteur de camping de voiture au lac george Le terrain de
camping a une station de confort, des plages, et accès aux
sentiers de hausses courtes. Les excursionnistes intérieurs de
canoë ont un choix de plus de 40 lacs reliés ensemble. Les
randonneurs ont un choix de 45 emplacements le long de le
sentier de silhouette de 78 kilomètres.

Les premières
feuilles de jaune, oranges et rouges démarrent pour apparaître
en mi-septembre. Les couleurs maximales coïncident
habituellement avec l’Action de graces canadienne (le deuxième

municipalité de Killarney, située 12 kilomètres à l'ouest du
point d'accès de lac George, a une épicerie générale, un gaz,

Y a-t-il de
l'accès au compartiment géorgien du parc de Killarney ?
Le
compartiment de la baie georgienne peut être accédé par
l'intermédiaire de la voie d'accès de Chikanishing, située 2
kilomètres à l'ouest du terrain de camping de lac george. Il y a
un lancement de bateau et un grand aire de stationnement qui
procure à des visiteurs de voyager en bas de la crique de
Chikanishing au compartiment géorgien.

Friends: Making a Difference
With years of high-use by campers and
exposure to the elements taking its toll on boardwalks and
bridges along the Park’s portages, the Friends of Killarney Park
embarked on an ambitious program to replace these structures on
the portages between Carlyle and Kakakise Lake (940m) and
Kakakise and Norway Lake (1470m). In many cases, these trails,
which provide access to the Park’s scenic interior, cross
sensitive wetland areas and allow passage across creeks and
gullies. With its close proximity to a number of access points,
this corridor is popular amongst canoe trippers, from beginners
to more seasoned paddlers.
Working together with Ontario Parks
officials, and with the help of a group of dedicated Friends’
volunteers, the first planks were laid in the spring and
resulted in the much needed replacement of the footbridge at the
beginning of the Norway-Kakakise portage. Friends staff were
able to complete additional work in the fall. In order to finish
the project in 2009, materials were hauled in during the winter
months.

New Art Book: Impressions - An Artist's Introduction to
Killarney Provincial Park
Produced by
Artist-Naturalist Ernest Somers for the Friends of Killarney
Park. This publication is an artist’s
overview and introduction to the park’s many hiking trails and
canoe day- tripping opportunities. It consists of 96 pages
illustrated with over 90 drawings, paintings and sketches.
IMPRESSIONS is destined not only to become
a collector’s item, but also a source for renewing memories of
wonderful vacations spent exploring Killarney Provincial Park.

Killarney Clean Up and Rehabilitation Weekend 2008
The
Annual Friends of Killarney ‘Clean Up Weekend’ was held May
2nd and 3rd this year (traditionally
the first weekend of May). Wanting to lend a helping hand,
The ‘Clean Up Weekend’ was begun by a dedicated group of
volunteers 14 years ago.
This
year we had some 75 volunteers (the number of volunteers can
range from 60 – 100 people). The volunteers come from all
over Ontario - Toronto, Timmins, Kitchener – Waterloo area,
Ottawa. We have scout troops, primary school children,
families and even some retirees.
As in
previous years, the first priority is raking not just all of
the campsites, but also all of the roads and picnic areas
within the George Lake Campground. All fire pits are also
cleaned out.
In
addition, 8 campsites were “rehabilitated”. Over the years,
campers tend to go beyond the boundaries of the campsites,
which kills off the natural vegetation. In rehabilitating,
boundaries of the campsite are redefined, often with logs,
branches and whatever is readily available. Then, in order
to re-green areas where the vegetation has been killed off,
we replant small trees and bushes.
Furtermore,
volunteers canoed or hiked into the ‘interior’ campsites,
cleaning up the sites on Bell Lake, Killarney Lake and 8
sites along the Cloche Trail.
Another
group went into the Town of Killarney, and cleaned up the
waterfront.
With the
assistance of Ontario Parks staff, some volunteers built a
boardwalk across the creek from Kakakise to Norway Lakes.
Much of the lumber was delivered in winter by snowmobile–
although additional lumber was delivered by boat at the
beginning of the Clean Up Weekend.
Volunteers were provided breakfast and lunch on Saturday,
and breakfast on Sunday. The food was donated by Bill
Pitfield, owner of the Killarney General Store and the
Killarney Bay Inn (Killarney Bay Inn also hosts the Friends
of Killarney annual winter weekend). The Friends of
Killarney also thank Bill Pitfield for his contribution to
our weekend.
Those
volunteers who arrived on Friday, met in the Town of
Killarney for the traditional “fish and chips” dinner at Mr.
Perch Friday night.
Saturday
night is the traditional ‘pot luck’ dinner. Afterwards, we
always organize a special presentation. This year, Friends
of Killarney member, Ken Rae, showed the 30 minute video
which he produced of the ‘Sights and Sounds of Killarney
Park’. Anyone w ho has been to Killarney will love these
video, scenes from within the Park, trails, wildlife,
venues, a trip down memory lane. Anyone who has never been
to Killarney, watch this video – it’s just like being there
– it even includes the sound of the mosquitoes! This video
is a must see and can be purchased at “The Outpost”, or
